The pandemic has impacted all areas of our lives and, as we’ve reached the one-year point of spending more time at home and on-screen, Zoom work culture and video communication have people looking at their faces more than ever. Screen time leads us to critique our facial imperfections; health professionals have seen a noticeable increase in facial plastic surgery procedures related to several effects of the pandemic. Earlier this month I was interviewed by Lindsey Eaton from FOX59 and served as a medical expert on this topic.
I encourage you to watch the full story here.
While we have indeed noticed this increase in facial plastics procedures at OA Facial Plastics, the spike is also seen across the country. In fact, the American Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery conducted a survey among its professional members and 70% of respondents saw an increase in bookings and treatments over the course of the pandemic.
The survey went on to dig a little deeper as to the extent physicians felt various pandemic circumstances affected patients’ decisions:
- 96% indicate patients have more time and flexibility to recover
- 64% believe patients have more disposable income due to decreased spending in other areas
- 40% agree that patients have increased interest in eye procedures; eyes are the only attribute that can be seen while masked
- 39% believe patients are more interested in facelifts and necklifts and other neck procedures than ever before
I personally do not foresee that this increase in facial procedures will subside any time soon, but I do look forward to more face-to-face interaction in life versus video screens. The decision to undergo plastic surgery is a very personal one and involves many factors to consider with your medical professional.
